Training for Life

"The purpose of training is to tighten up the slack, toughen the body, and polish the spirit." — Morihei Ueshiba

Re-post from Newsletter published April 21, 2026

It's been too long since the last email, but I'm committed to getting back to this more regularly. Anyway, I wanted to highlight a topic that I've been talking to folks about a lot in person, but haven't written down, yet. And, that's the fact that there's a big difference between working out and training.

Working out is showing up and putting in effort. That matters. But training has a direction. Training is built around something — a reason, an outcome, a version of yourself you're trying to become or maintain. The effort may be similar, at least physically, but the intention is different. And that intentionality means everything.

Most of you aren't here because you want to be good at the gym. You're here because you want to feel good in your life. You want energy. You want to move without pain. You want to keep up with your kids, perform well at work, and age in a way you're proud of. You want to feel capable — not just for a Tuesday early morning workout, but on a Saturday afternoon three years from now when your kid or grandkid asks you to race to the ocean or begs you to throw them in the air "one more time" for the 12th time in a row.

That's what we build our programming around. Not the most impressive movements. Not the highest-skill gymnastics. Not workouts designed to humble you. Movements the human body is designed to do — squats, hinges, presses, carries — chosen because they transfer directly to real life, they work for nearly everyone, and they keep working for as long as you keep showing up.

This is what Complete Training is built for. And it's what everything we put on the calendar is an expression of. Speaking of the calendar, we have A LOT coming up.

SPECIAL EVENT!

Bourbon and Barbells Third Anniversary Breakfast at Cornerstone | This Friday, April 24 Following the 6:15am class | 7:15am | Cornerstone | Free, open to all

If you've never crossed paths with Bourbon and Barbells, this Friday is a good place to start.

Three years ago, a group of guys started showing up together at Cornerstone. What they've built since then is something worth paying attention to. Founding member Mark Petersen described it simply: "Bourbon is our interest. Fellowship and brotherhood is our draw. Philanthropy and charity will always be our cause."

The group's President, Masoud Ghohestani, put it another way: brotherhood and fitness, in that order. They train hard, hold high standards, and keep each other accountable — but the deeper work is the connection. Slowing down. Having real conversations. Building the kind of trust that means you're not doing life alone.

That's not incidental to what we're trying to build here. That's exactly it.

This Friday they're celebrating three years with a free post-workout breakfast open to everyone. Come train at 6:15, stay and eat, and spend some time with a group that gets it. You'll be glad you did.

The Bigger Point

Every one of these events — from a Friday morning breakfast, to a summer camp for your kids, to an ultramarathon event in Tennessee — is an expression of the same idea: fitness is the foundation, not the finish line. The work you do here is preparation for something bigger than the workout itself.

That's worth training for. Not just working out for.
