What is CrossFit?

Is CrossFit safe for kids?

Simple Answer: Yes! CrossFit helps young athletes develop a broad physical capacity and helps improve their body awareness. In fact, CrossFit can even help athletes become less susceptible to injuries outside of the gym. In CrossFit we perform movements that are natural for our bodies. Dr. Katina Thornton was interviewed by CrossFit HQ in 2023 and explained, that CrossFit will also help to keep their bodies mobile and pain-free as they enter adulthood.

At what age can my kids start CrossFit?

CrossFit can be perfect for kids of all ages. As soon as your child is old enough to listen to instruction, and can generally understand simple cues related to the positioning of their body they can benefit from CrossFit. At CrossFit Fairfield, our sweet spot starts around 10-12 years old through the end of high school. In this age group, kids and teens are getting more competitive and understand the charter of "intensity" well enough to push through when the workout inevitably feels a bit less like play and a bit more like work. We focus on developing athletes across physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellness and that takes some more maturity than kids younger than 10 can typically bring to the class.

Some CrossFit Kids programs and classes focus on younger children and are dedicated to making fitness feel like play. We still have a blast at CrossFit Fairfield, but our goals for our athletes reach beyond this.

What do I need to bring to class?
What should I wear?

Bring yourself, a positive attitude and maybe a bottle of water or something else to drink. If you're going to bring a sports drink or something other than water, consider zero sugar options. "No [added] sugar" is a part of the nutritional recommendations that are a foundation of CrossFit. See "Fitness in 100 Words.

Regular gym shoes are fine and whatever clothes you would typically wear to gym class or to a sport practice is perfect.

What if I don't know how to do CrossFit?

You're in luck! That's what a coach is for. We will make the class, the movements, and the workout accessible to anyone at any level. It is often said that "CrossFit is universally scalable" and that's a complex way of saying "we've got you covered."

And, no matter how long you've been doing CrossFit - whether it's your first class or you've been doing CrossFit for decades - there is always something to learn. Humility is a hallmark of CrossFit for this very reason and we coach all of our athletes to appreciate the opportunity they have to make the most of each moment.
