The Art of Becoming: Your Daily Vote for Change

A Warrior does not try to appear one way or another, he simply is." -- Paulo Coelho, Warrior of the Light

ADAPTED FROM A NEWSLETTER PUBLISHED January 17, 2025

Growth isn’t neat. It isn’t linear. And it certainly isn’t comfortable.

But here’s the truth: “Every action you take is a vote for the person you want to be or become.” The question I'm asking you today is, how are you voting?

Put another way —and in the words I often use when encouraging athletes to tidy up the gym after a workout —"How you do anything is how you do everything."

Your state of being, the way you are, is a reflection on who you are. If you put a 35lb kettlebell where the 70lb kettlebells go, maybe you're just a little bit absent-minded or disorganized. Or, maybe you're careless, or -- even worse -- unreliable or untrustworthy. In the moment, it seems irrelevant, but every action is a vote.

Speaking of actions, we’re now in week two of the Breakthrough Blueprint, and we’re seeing our participants push hard to keep stepping into their new identities. It’s inspiring to watch them embrace the challenge, lean into discomfort, and redefine what’s possible. What's most exciting to me, is how each participant is managing the obstacles that are inevitably getting in their way. They're sticking to the program and voting with the action to be the kind of people who follow through.

What's really cool is how that is rubbing off on others in the gym. Class attendance has been on a really nice upswing, which is leading to a really amazing vibe in classes the past two weeks. The discipline and consistency you are all putting on display everyday in the gym mirrors the focus I know you're taking into your relationships, your career, and your personal growth. Every rep, every step into discomfort, is a reflection of the kind of person you’re becoming—not just in the gym, but in every area of your life.

Even if you haven't been able to make it in as often as you'd like, just remember that the path to becoming your best self—whether it’s inside the gym, at work, or in life—is messy by design. Failure, frustration, and plenty of other “F” words, I'm sure, are part of the process. But, that's what makes your journey yours. Think about your favorite blues or soul artist, as an example. You don’t just hear their voice; you feel it. That depth comes from life’s raw experiences—the pain, effort, and grit that are transformed into art. Your actions are like that guitar in their hands, the medium through which you build your story.

So, What’s Your Vote Today?

Think about it: Every small action you take is a step toward the person you’re becoming. Just like our Breakthrough Blueprint participants and our Open athletes, every moment of discomfort is a chance to grow stronger.

Here’s a simple challenge:

  • Take five minutes to identify one area where you’ve been avoiding discomfort.

  • Make a plan to take one action toward it—big or small—this week.

We’re here to grow together, one vote at a time. What will yours be today?
