What are the Ten General Physical Skills?

CrossFit identifies 10 key physical skills, outlined in the 2002 "What Is Fitness?" article. These skills include endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, coordination, agility, balance, speed, and accuracy.

1. Endurance: Body's ability to take in, process, and deliver oxygen.

2. Stamina: Body's ability to process, deliver, store, and use energy.

3. Strength: Muscular units' ability to apply force.

4. Flexibility: Maximize joint range of motion.

5. Power: Muscular units' ability to apply maximum force quickly.

6. Speed: Minimize the time for repeated movements.

7. Coordination: Combine different movement patterns into one.

8. Agility: Quickly transition between movement patterns.

9. Balance: Control the body's center of gravity concerning its support base.

10. Accuracy: Control movement direction and intensity.

Your overall fitness is determined by your proficiency in these skills. Training enhances endurance, stamina, strength, and flexibility through measurable organic changes in the body.

On the other hand, coordination, agility, balance, and accuracy improve through practice, affecting the nervous system.

Power and speed result from both training and practice.

For optimal physical competence, it's crucial to focus on developing all 10 general physical skills.

At CrossFit Fairfield we adhere to the CrossFit Charter of constantly varied functional movements executed at high intensity, which is how we ensure all our athletes are making progress toward a more broad, general and inclusive fitness that develops all of the ten general physical skills.
